Pomegreat

TEACH ME PLEASE!

We have just received the following email from Deb and thought there might be other's that wish to know how to peel a pomegranate fruit without getting covered in it's lovely red juice:

Dear Jo

Will you please share your method of opening pomegranates with 'bowl of water and sharp knife'?

Thanks

Deb"

And here is our reply:

"Hi Deb

Many thanks for your email.
The easiest way I find to feel a pomegranate is:

1) Slice just into the skin of the pomegranate from the top to the bottom. Don't push the knife in too far otherwise you'll hit the precious arils inside.

2) Repeat this scoring three more times in a similar fashion to how you would make it easy to peel an orange.

3) Place your pomegranate in a bowl of water and use your fingers to pull the pomegranate apart into the four separate sections. By doing this underwater you stop your clothes from getting covered in red juice.

4) Use your fingers to separate the arils from the red skin and white membrane that surround them.

5) Throw the hard bits of red skin away.

6) The white membrane will float to the surface and the arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl.

7) Use your hands to scoop the white membrane bits off the surface of the water and discard them.

8) Remove the arils from the water with your hands or drain with a sieve.

You are now left with a whole pomegranate's worth of tasty and nutritious arils to do with as you wish.

Here are a couple of video's that might help you too:
